Sounds like you're using GDM as a display manager - it's handling your login, i.e. it's where your enter your username and password. Or if you have auto-login enabled, it's still run in the background in order to perform the login for you. In any case, it's a problem with the packaging of GDM, which is a GNOME component. Reassigning to GNOME team, I'm sure they know this area better :)
