FYI, it is possible to configure kdesu to use sudo instead of su to gain root
privileges:
kwriteconfig5 --file kdesurc --group super-user-command --key
super-user-command sudo
(run that as the user, not as root)

Of course that doesn't fix your actual problem that su doesn't work, but it
should "fix" kdesu at least...
