P.S. In my /etc/sysconfig settings, the windowmanager is set to "gnome" but the displaymanager is set to "kdm". The problem appears as soon as the X11 login screen is displayed and persists until the display-manager service is restarted (or until something unknown to me happens as during the zypper run mentioned in comment #0).
