This sysconfig/windowmanager is used by /etc/profile.d/profile(c)sh to set the WINDOWMANAGER env variable. This is still used by sessions which are started by xinit (or at least use the xinitrc scripts). These profiles are part of aaa_base. Of course we can throw all this away or greatly simplify all the scripts which have been fine tuned by Werner. But it may break scenarios people have been using over years. We'd need someone to go over all the profile and startup scripts (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc(.common) /etc/skel/.xinitrc.template /etc/X11/xdm/*) and find out what can be simplified or removed. Once these files have been reworked, the result needs to be documented in the release notes as users $HOME/.xinitrc scripts may now not work any more. This is however not part of this ticket. If we are sure there are entries in sysconfig/windowmanager which are no longer used, we should remove them. Since most of them are KDE-related, we should ask the KDE maintainers. This should be done on a different ticket as well.
