#913058 for 13.2 happily propaged to 42.1 and now to 42.2. tar-1.28 and tar-1.27 both suffer from this problem. It might be a good idea to switch to tar-1.29 as in tumbleweed. Just checked tar-1.29-1.2 from that one - works as desired. One always hopes that recovery from backup is rarely necessary. But in case, there is already enough work to come, and you really don't need that sort additional nuisance (i. e. manual extraction of every single piece).
