This indeed seems to be something very particular to my user's set-up. I have now tested both with new users on the same system as well as with my existing user on my backup system and in both cases this works. I wander what I messed up but given how specific the issue is and that even I cannot reproduce it somewhere else it would be fine for me to close this as not reproducible.
