Upstream removed the unmount/eject option from "shell notification". Currently this is as you say, only available from Files (nautilus). Changes wanted to this have to be reported upstream https://bugzilla.gnome.org --- You can also install an extension https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/7/removable-drive-menu/ Hopefully that one will fill your need for a menu.
