The option was added in 9489b2b1cfd5278eec74d139d0004fc82bc9c222 to ppc64 config without any explanation (probably from upstream pSeries defconfig), and propagated to ppc config in 1b0fe63d603970a83e4c3160ef4a51fb16cbc1c2 without any explanation again.
