Unfortunately the xorg-x11-fonts package is an amalgation of a plethora of
fonts (only common factor being distributed as part of the X server):

1) 8 fonts in Speedo format, 2 typefaces (Bitstream Courier 10 Pitch and
Bitstream Charter) in 4 variants each. X11R7 Release Notes:
Deprecated: "Speedo font module & fonts (disabled by default in 6.8 and 6.9)"
Note, the same 8 fonts are provided in Type1 format,
/usr/share/fonts/Type1/c0???bt_.pfb

2) 3635 pcf fonts (each typeface in 9 encodings, two resolutions (75 and 100
dpi), 4 variants and up to 6 sizes.

Each of these fonts belongs to one of the following 8 typefaces/families:
  - Adobe Courier
  - Adobe Helvetica
  - Adobe New Century Schoolbook
  - Adobe Times
  - Adobe Utopia
  - B&H LucidaBright
  - B&H Lucida
  - B&H LucidaTypewriter

Courier may be useful as a bitmap console font, but the others are IMHO quite
useless as bitmap fonts. For all of these, better scalable replacements are
available (Adobe Utopia is available as Type1, for the other Adobe fonts metric
compatible substitutes are available from URW++ under
AGPL-3-with-embedding-exception. For Lucida, there is the very similar B&H
Luxi).

3) B&H Luxi (Sans, Regular, Mono)x(Regular, slanted, bold) is provided in Type1
and Truetype format, where TTF has a bigger glyph coverage. Note, this font is
provided under its own restrictive, proprietary license (!not! MIT), see
ftp://www.x.org/pub/X11R6.8.2/doc/LICENSE3.html#19

4) Bitstream Charter is provided in 3 different packages:
- Bitmap/PCF: xorg-x11-fonts-core
- Type1, pfb: xorg-x11-fonts
- Type1, pfa: ghostscript-fonts-other
The License is permissive, although it should be contained in the package(s).

5) Goha-Tibeb Zemen, opentype font with coverage only for ethiopic unicode
range (0x1200-0x13ff, http://jrgraphix.net/research/unicode.php)

6) Serto * and Estrangelo families, coverage for latin, arabic and syriac
unicode ranges.

In the end we have a package which claims coverage for a huge range of scripts
(the union of all included fonts), causing bad rendering and confusion for most
users.
