Out of curiosity, what version of TW was the patch released in? I'm curious because I installed 20170724 and encountered the exact same issue (I'd had it create an encrypted home volume.) In my case, I could still log in as root, just not any regular user. After updating the /etc/crypttab entry to add the "nvme" to the beginning of the volume name, it works as expected.
