I am also experiencing a kernel freeze when applying patch 2019-1479.
Using nomodeset allows system to boot. This applies to kernel version
4.12.14-lp151.28.4.1 and 4.12.14-lp151.31.1.
Running
modprobe -r nouveau
modprobe nouveau modeset=1
PC freezes.
