I'm sure it is debuggable ;) - startx only works as root as the SUID bit isn't set any more. - I suspect he culprit to be gdm, you may want to edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager to select a different one - try and start with xdm - even though it may not have a look which is very appealing to you. However, before you do so, you may want to collect the Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old files, open a new bug(*) and attach them. - It may be gone with Leap, however if you will stay with 13.2 for a while I'd rather debug this with you than with someone with little experience ;) (*) you may have done so already and I haven't seen it if so please kindly point me to it.
