Okay I can confirm that Fedora 32 with Linux Kernel version
5.6.6-300.fc32.x86_64  x86_64 GNU/Linux I can control the screen brightness but
I can't do the workaround for the touchpad.

But in this version of the kernel we have cat
/sys/class/backlight/*/actual_brightness constantly stuck to 2827 or something
but still the brightness control works as expected. 

Did not try using the nvidia non-free drivers this one.

So I highly suspect that something happened between 5.6.6 and the mainline
kernel.
