Thinking of it further: I agree that requiring a primary partition might be
overkill if not available; however, why not to create it when there is only 1
or 2 primary partitions on the system and therefore there is possibility to
create it?

Anyway, according to the log, GRUB2 was installed on /dev/sda2, which should
work well (and even the flag in the partition table looks correct). Michael,
any idea why GRUB2 does not boot?
