What I was going to write:

closing the lid in KDE (at least - not sure if it's desktop dependant) does not
always result in a suspend.

I tried this a bunch of times yesterday. Probably 80% success rate, but at the
end of the evening I closed the lid and walked away only to find that in the
morning the laptop did not suspend. Nothing in /var/log/messages about trying
to do so, either -- network remained connected throughout the evening, etc...
