Gaah, I've finally reproduced the problem. I found a G550 PCIe card, which I put into a Sandy Bridge system. Leap 42.1 and 42.2 work beautifully, whereas Tumbleweed doesn't. I tried compiling Tumbleweed's xf86-video-mga on Leap and... it still works. Dang. I also installed Leap 42.2's KOTD on Tumbleweed - it's still broken on TW. Also, it seems that xf86-video-mga is indeed making use of mga.ko. For some reason, the DDX fails to load it on TW, whereas it auto-loads it on the first X server start on Leap. Manually modprobing mga allows X to come up with the mga DDX. Felix, does 'modprobe mga' and then restarting X help?
