I consider this a really stupid configure script:

[   91s] checking for /usr/bin/freetype-config cflags...
-I/usr/include/freetype2
[   91s] checking for /usr/bin/freetype-config libs... -lXft -lfreetype
[   91s] checking if we can link with FreeType libraries... no

=> so we WANT to use it, it fails to link and then it simply continues...
