Yes the old kernel still boots, also with new initrd and is the only change
remaining. I have found that this actually seems to be a graphics problem. I
can enter the LUKS passphrase blind in what I think is a framebuffer mode, and
the system continues to boot. Then there is some graphics nonsense and the
desktop comes up (autologin in this case).
