Removing base-3.16.6-2.1 brings in desktop-3.16.6-2.1 and removing that desktop
brings back base, even when using -u in zypper rm. Finally I found that
removing the kernel modules for virtualbox belonging to 3.16.6-2.1 resolved the
problem.
