I downloaded Ghostscript 9.19 and also noticed that the repository also has Epson ESC linux drivers; so I also downloaded them. Reset the printers to use the Epson drivers and everything seems to work now. I suspect a bug in either Ghostscript or Gutenprint, but cannot work out what the problem is. However the workaround is OK, so you can close this bug report.
