OK, and to make this more clear: I need to press Enter on the prompt on the console just before the plymouth three-dot screen comes up, and then the plymouth prompt appears, and then I can enter the passphrase for the disk just fine. May take pressing enter on the console prompt a few times to make sure it's not prompting at the time of the switch.
