Please give alsa-info.sh output. Run with --no-upload option and attach the output to Bugzilla. Judging from your description, I guess the hardware is either Haswell or Broadwell? If yes, you have HDMI/DP controller as the primary and the analog I/O controller as the secondary. That's often problematic when you don't use PulseAudio. At first, try to put options snd-hda-intel index=1,0 to /etc/modprobe.d/50-hda.conf, and reboot. This will swap the device assignments, so that the first one will be the analog I/O.
