Other than AuC-TeX is IMHO not useful ... as texlive has nowadays four different engines like old LaTeX/TeX, LuaTeX, Omega, and XeTeX engine. And pdf generation is an option for all engines. I'm always used and still use Auc-TeX the last twenty years now.
