Aha, that's interesting. Take alsa-info.sh output at the state where aplay worked after replug. Then try to play via PulseAudio. You should be able to choose the output in the profile. If it doesn't work, try to adjust the mixer manually via "amixer -c0" (or such) to the same level as you succeeded with ALSA native aplay.
