Yes - lower level stuff always changes. It is one problem of proprietary third-party drivers that they are not adapted to changes in lower level stuff and then third-party software may suddenly fail. I wonder how you come to the conclusion that it is we (i.e. openSUSE) who made some bugs somewhere because usually we do not make the software but we primarily distribute free software as is. What is the full output of lsusb and lsusb -t on your computer where the scanner is connected?
