1.  Can I display the file with gs?
    Yes.

2.  Does reverting the ghostscript update fix the problem.

    I used 'yast->software management' to revert the ghostscript and
    ghostscript packages to 9.15-5.1.x86_64.

    Ockular is now OK. Well spotted!
