Hi all, The awesome brochure sources have finally been recovered. You can find them here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29347181/openSUSE%20brochure_v4.eps There is a number of changes we need to do, all summarized in the document with the updated text: * Text needs review * Need to turn the Brochure in a 3-panel trifold on A4 * Remove 'links' pane on front * Replace front text with shorter text (see below) * Re-arrange back to fit A4 and use improved text (see below) * Get rid of the SUSE and Novell logos, this is an openSUSE Brochure * We need to make this Creative Commons, except for the logo's. * The openSUSE Logo on the front page is some self made logo with strange color in the text, needs to be fixed. * There is only one small Geeko on the whole brochure. We need more :D * A bit less SUSE Studio, a bit more other openSUSE projects. Well, I see why - problem is, we don't have the resources to get the Distro artwork done in time, let alone create TWO sets of artwork. Moreover - what I'd like to see is the distro artwork evolving instead of completely changing. That idea (which came up on this list) is very good imho and helps with this problem. And yes, it IS a problem, it's better to have generic artwork as well as release-specific. But I'd rather print 50.000 flyers now with cool 12.1 artwork and have 1000 left after 12.2 is out than have no flyers or crappy artwork on them. So Bryen is right, let's discuss an artwork strategy AFTER the release. Let's get this out first. Once we have the flyer printed we can improve it, and maybe, we have time to create separate artwork. Of course - if you want to make the flyers pretty, with distro-release-independent artwork, and can manage to do that in 2 weeks (notice the list of changes we still need to do, see my initial mail), awesome. Then we have time to print them :D

Brochure V4 in A4 tri-folio folding like /_\ has been assembled It's based on the previous A3 artwork (base background) without the 11.4 celadon made by Karl. You are able to find the two files in -artwork/flyers openSUSE Brochure V4 tri-folio A4 recto.svg + pdf openSUSE Brochure V4 tri-folio A4 verso.svg + pdf They contain all the text modifications Jos want in them. Now it's far from perfect: no fancy artwork in it for example. But now the svg base exist and anybody is able to adjust of change it. I will not be able to work more on them before next week. PS : It's quite easy to import the .eps Jos has in it's dropbox and create a quadri-folio for Letter to be printed in US. It is awesome! Ok, maybe we can improve the artwork side of things, but it's pretty good already. What would you say is easier: send them the SVG and let them use Inkscape or send them the doc file and let them translate there and we put it in the doc?
I will not be able to work more on them before next week.
PS : It's quite easy to import the .eps Jos has in it's dropbox and create a quadri-folio for Letter to be printed in US. Then adjustment has to be made. No, it's not :D
At least, it doesn't work for me, most of the images go blank :(

It is awesome! Ok, maybe we can improve the artwork side of things, but it's pretty good already. Sure there's place to improvement, I wouldn't have done a final to print in one shot :D
What would you say is easier: send them the SVG and let them use Inkscape or send them the doc file and let them translate there and we put it in the doc?
ok here I describe how we should firstly finish the base document ... (they = artist, authors contributors) I would said, branch the repository, make modifications in inkscape, (small are good) For example : modify one paragraph, save the file git add thefile.svg git commit -m "Important comment about what has been changed" then do the second modification git add git commit -" Yet another modification" at the end of a work session ( something like a coherent step, keep it short like 45minutes/1hour ) git push at that times the modifications are uploaded on the repo . and other can work. If they don't have commit rights we create that for them, we have something like 8 admins.... They can work on their own branch and then ask for a merge request. Now for the translation there's several approach that come to my mind. We can like Pascal do for the counter place tags inside the svg document and then have on one part the translation strings and the "artistic layout" on the other side. Would be cool to get it updated or refreshed ... But that create a too much techi dependency. And sometimes what take 4 letters in English will take 32 in German or French etc. so I think that any translator should adapt the font size and box layout to his native... It will just cost more manual work... I think we will be able to create and empty English template For the translation in Flyers I would like to propose a i18n folder then add the language ISO code ... to be continue ...

I see an ".eps", to be folded twice (If I understand well, fold once, then fold again the result) from Jos, then a three fold from Bruno, the two of them impossible to print because they have no margin (see below)

surfing the web I beg I found the reason: inkscape do not read eps bitmap images, only true vector. At first glance I lack the robot image and the facebook image. So will have to take a snapshot of high definition and include it.

possible. I really like the original eps flyer. It's probably easier to fold (by hand) than the three fold (I have lot of them and don't like to fold them). printing: It's very easy and cheap to print on *color paper* - usually plain color. The color is not always very nice, but they can be printed on black and white laser printer or photocopier for neraly no money BUT The margin problem is a nightmare! My laser HP 5M have nearly 1 cm margin where I can't print. Keeping this on a folded flyer is difficult, having regular marging also. So I think we have to separate the flyer components (images, block of texts) and make them available separately (once included in the flyer, they are sometime difficult to degroup). Like this the user may be able to adjust to his needs. Libreoffice is probably the worst tool for building this, but it have a three fold option. Inkskape works. Is it easy? I have to make sure scribus should be the best choice.
