[opensuse-artwork] Request for artwork openSUSE Conference 2015
Dear artwork team! We would really like to get going on the artwork for the upcoming openSUSE Conference (1-4 may 2015 in The Hague NL). There already was an issue opened in progress.opensuse.org: https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/3934 And in there was a community voting on a theme for the conference, it has become: Flexibility through diversity There is a preliminary website on OSEM: https://events.opensuse.org/conference/osc15 In the meanwhile, if any you have any time to already gather and/or visualise some ideas I would be very happy to give you some more input! Looking forward to working with you! Hi Victor, thanks for responding so fast! First of all we need a logo, there has been some contact on that with Andy (cc'ed). Some general ideas for components in the theming are summarized in this issue (we use Redmine for tracking the tickets): https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/3934#note-4 Perhaps you can coordinate with Andi about this? If you have any questions, please drop me an email! Looking forward to your work! All the best! All the best! Hans On Github, I created a few folders for OSC15 in artwork / Marketing Materials / Events / openSUSE Conference. I would just need for someone to pull the requests and we can store logos in that location.

So you just have to 1) create the pull request so people with commit access can push it. 2) ask also admins@o.o to give you commit access to this repository. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Board, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Forget to say, if you don't have forked the main repo, and you've made changes on it in your local clone, you can also create a patch First commit locally with nice comment your changes then git diff > /tmp/o-artwork.patch Put the patch somewhere we (comitter) can download it and we will apply it to the master branch. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Board, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

My 2 cents: please, no YAVEL (Yet Another Vincent's Ear Logo), we've been flooded with these over the last couple of years. @Hans: Briljant idea, I know there's no poll or survey yet, but MC Escher has my vote. If anyone could transform the "birds" to geckos, that would be something. Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. Thanks Gertjan! I agree, there are quite a lot of stereotype Vincent van Gogh images floating around, but that might also be because we are Dutch and are being flooded with them anyway. Escher has both a technical and an artistic approach to his works, i like that a lot because it closely relates to the artisanship opensource software entices. All the best! Hello team I went ahead and created a set of logos for the conference. I have decided, in this occasion, to go with something more striking, simple and less geographical. My reasoning behind this direction is mostly based on experience. I have created logos for the conference and summit for about 3 years now and they have all been location based. That means there is a special set of constraints and problems that you have to sort out with the logos. They tend to be too complex and detailed. Hard to work with if you want to print them on shirts, caps, badges, etc. There is also a matter of how strong the image is that gets lost when a logo is too complex. It feels as though the message of the logo drowns on the complexities around the main idea. So this is what I decided to create http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h414/anditosan/Chameleon_zps62fdbd97.png As you may notice, I have used colors that identify some graphical elements that we have in the current 13.2 and also used the font that the Netherlands used on their jerseys at the world cup. I wanted to bring that out more than any geographical elements given that they could have been too complex and rather blend. Not to say that the Netherlands has nothing to offer :D It is rather a stylistic route that I am taking to make sure that we are better prepared to make more materials with this image. I have uploaded the images and sources to GIT — Anditosan On November 21, 2014 at 5:17:08 AM, Hans de Raad (info@hcderaad.nl(mailto:info@hcderaad.nl)) wrote:

Hi Andi, many thanks for your efforts! I understand the reasoning behind your decision, however i do feel that this looses quite a bit of the regional approach, and while i don't dislike the logo i do want to pitch in 1 specific image from Escher that i think could be used without having too much of the graphical hassle/issues you describe. http://www.mcescher.com/gallery/most-popular/sky-and-water-i/ If it needs to be kept small then just the geekos in the raster would suffice, if it could be a little bigger then perhaps a morphed penguin to geeko might be possible. When possible, please take a look at it and give some feedback on it. But again, thanks for your efforts so far! All the best! I am not entirely sure that we can use that artwork for us. Do we know about its copyright? What is allowed or not? If you would like to make something related to that painting, I would recommend that you come up with something of your own first and then see if that fits any logo idea.I would think that you have a vision in mind that can help guide the thoughts of the design. Can you produce something along those lines and then we can tell if it will do for a good logo? -- Andy (anditosan) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Victor, again, many thanks for your input! I have a little input which i would like to offer as constructive criticism: - The font and casting (all uppercase?) make it quite hard to see if the O and the S are actually that, they could pretty easily be read as 0 and 5. I think "oSC" has pretty much always been written like that and perhaps that offers a little more recognizability. - The theme for the conference is: Flexibility through diversity Although i like the one you used, i'd like to stick with the theme we've decided upon. - It severely lacks geekos... :-) On a more serious note, I dont find anything particularly resembling or referring to openSUSE in a visual sense in it. This could also be color or a geeko tail somewhere. Hopefully this is workable input for you? We'd like to make a decision on the logo soon and i am very happy that we already have two serious options (yours and Andi's)! A logo should and can be used in and/or around the materials in which the conference logo but I would not suggest to make it a requirement to include the logo or some part of it in the conference logo.
In addition, I would add that it is not always necessary to have a different logo for every event. It is LOT of work and again, weakens the brand. Hi Kenneth, i agree with you in general, also see the other thread. When it comes to brand identity when participating in other events i think a generic logo would definitely be best, for our own Conference however (since this is our main event and only once a year), i very much like the possibility to adhere our style to the location and occassion. This would save a lot of work in general because we would be able to create and reuse 1 set of visuals for all events outside our own main conference, while still retaining the flexibility to choose a theme and logo for ourself. As always, love your work :-)
It is rather a stylistic route that I am taking to make sure that we are better prepared to make more materials with this image.
Ah, somebody who puts some thought into it. How nice! I just tried it, works well with the web and print. The only thing that worries me a bit is the type, it's hard to place as the Geeko is too asymmetrical, but that depends on the medium anyway. +1 Henne -- Henne Vogelsang http://www.opensuse.org Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org
I know a few of you might already be working on the OSC15 logo, but I had a few ideas that could help with inspiration. Vincent Van Gogh was born near the location of OSC15 near Breda and he went to college 11km away in Leiden. Of course he spent a lot of time in The Hague, moved to France and then cut his ear off. His style is unique and could look pretty cool on a chameleon running on water. -- Respectfully, Douglas DeMaio Senior Consultant, openSUSE douglas.demaio@suse.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org
Hi Douglas, that sounds like a nice idea, to attach Dutch artists/artworks to the logo! Please take into consideration that we also have the MC Escher museum in The Hague, perhaps that nicely appeals to our more technical inner selfs? Again, thanks for the idea, i like it a lot! I would prefere to stay with "The Hague, a peace place" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hague_Conventions_of_1899_and_1907 with a geecko in place of a columbus :-) jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org
Thats' also an option, and a valid one, the motto of The Hague is "International city of pease and justice". But, personally, i'd like a logo which doesnt directly relate to a political point of view (however nice) and i do like the art approach a lot because that also underlines the creativity and innovation-factor which openSUSE is famous for (OBS, Yast, etc). Just my 2 cents! All the best! Hans -- OpenNovations / DevHdR Van Sevenbergestraat 49 2274PK Voorburg Tel +31 6 83578847 www.hcderaad.nl On 2014-11-21 09:59, jdd wrote:
