[opensuse-artwork] Reworked 12.2 KDM theme...

Hi, Some users complained to me and swyear (swyear(a)opensuse.org) about 12.2 KDM theme online/offline. To be frank it's the first time that we've ever heared of criticism over our artwork...that does not feel good. But yes they have enough reasons to complain...the login screen is separated into two blocks which are nearly obaque that discord with kde's plasma and even discord with the ksplash we created...and the two blocks seems to be of full use of widescreen but displays very ugly on any 4:3 screen with resolution less than 1024:768. So we have to believe it might because our late schedule for 12.2 which makes us under a lot of pressure and create things in a hurry. So if it has moved, maybe someone might point kwwii to the new repositories. [opensuse-artwork] Holiday Season Banner

As our current banners around the web are starting to get stale, I suggest we create some holiday web banners. They would be posted at: - Forums - www.opensuse.org landing page - Facebook Timeline cover (851x315 px) - Google+ - icons for Twitter, Facebook Profile Pic, etc. I recommend that we be careful though. Do not make the banner religious, do not target a specific religion (for example, I'm Jewish, so Christmas means nothing.) It should either be broad (Season's Greetings + Happy New Year) or inclusive (All major holidays represented across multiple denominations). The latter one being more difficult and challenging to do. Currently, the openSUSE Election Committee is using these spaces to broadcast the upcoming Board elections. But we'll be finished with that by Dec. 17th, so new holiday banners can be posted at that time. It might be a good idea to review and develop time-appropriate banners that can be used later down the line throughout the year so we don't scramble with creativity at the last minute. Thanks! Marcus, For your reference (and anyone elses) The correct git repository for collaborative artwork in progress, assets, and marketing materials is https://github.com/openSUSE/artwork The correct git repository for distribution branding is https://github.com/openSUSE/branding What's the difference between the artwork repo and branding repo? The way I see it (and I may be mistaken) is the artwork repo is there as a repository of artwork, assets, marketing materials, basically everything the artwork team need to make stuff, and the stuff the marketing teams need. It's also a great place for collaborative work for stuff like core distribution artwork/wallpapers, etc. The files in this repository are organised however the artwork and marketing team feels like organising, and there is little or not technical requirements for the files being stored here, as they are not directly used by the distribution. The branding repo on the other hand is more of a 'staging area' to hold the finished/nearly finished artworks that are going to be used in the actual distribution. The files in this repository are organised by their purpose in the distribution. Any files uploaded will need to conform to the technical requirements of the distribution and the current build scripts which are also held in this repository (As an aside, this is where our current requirement for all distribution artwork to be SVG based comes from - the script takes a few svg sources and produces dozens of different formats in whatever rastering, color depth, sizing formats that the dozens of different areas of the distribution requires) The repository is arranged in branches, one for each version of the distribution. The idea is, a packager should be able to clone a branch of the branding repo, run the Makefile, and then submit the resulting tar.gz file through OBS to be included in the distribution. [opensuse-artwork] New visual theme for KDE

Hello everyone, this mail is meant to present and discuss the work done by a number of openSUSE contributors for a new visual style for KDE. A number of weeks ago, people in the #opensuse-kde channel started hacking on a new theme for KDE, which should have sported the iconic green of the distro. Alin suggested during a discussion to base the work on the Produkt theme[1]. At that point, the openSUSE contributor shumski (as he's known in IRC) started working on that, also taking a look at the icon set needed for the theme. Due to the KDE team's decision of bringing the 4.10 version of the KDE Platform, Applications and Workspaces for 12.3, shumski also made adjustments to handle the slight differences that took place between 4.9 and 4.10 with regards to theming. A very early draft was published in my blog[2] since I wanted to make the process hopefully open and communicate to the community what those people were doing. The overall impressions were positive and work continued. Recently, this theme was also pushed to KDE:Distro:Factory and then to Factory itself as one of the possible candidate themes for 12.3. I also blogged showing the new look[3]. At this point, we felt necessary to gather the feedback of a larger part of the openSUSE contributors, hence this mail. We're interested in how this can be integrated with the ongoing work of the artwork team and in general taking account of all feedback, good or bad. So, give it a spin (it is in KDE:Distro:Factory or Factory itself, the KDF version is however more up to date) and let us know what you think. At the moment this theme is the default opensuse branding theme for KDE (so you will get it with the *-branding-openSUSE KDE packages). As we work on the next release of openSUSE. We would like to invite our community to participate with ideas to guide our design team in choosing artwork for openSUSE 12.3. Right now, there are some ideas coming through. As designers, it is important to find ideas, words, or concepts that can help guide our thoughts into choosing artwork for 12.3. Please provide us with a max of 3 design "thoughts," for example 1. Simplicity 2. Clarity 3. Light Choose any 3 of these that can help describe our thought process.
