I have a

to get modern versions of Linux to run on it, somewhat similarly to

"Uncompressing Linux..." ).
Does the new u-boot change the arcNumber? Some times people chose
random numbers and only later got an official ID reserved. So
maybe your old u-boot version exposes an unofficial arcNumber -
which your kernel expects - but new u-boot exposes a new official
arcNumber, that your kernel doesn't know about?
Thank you very much for this suggestion - I think that's it.
The newer u-boot (which I built from source) says in the output of
arch_number = 0x00000DDE
The older u-boot gave 0x00000A63.
But trying to override this with "setenv arcNumber 2659" doesn't
seem to help me.
I believe these devices were manufactured in two different types.
