The following release announcement of Leap 15.5 can be found on news.opensuse.org NUREMBERG, Germany – The release of openSUSE’s latest 15-series version marks years of maintenance and security that began more than five years ago.. The maturity of Leap 15.5 comes into play as new technological changes of the last five years have been introduced, such as container technologies, immutable systems, virtualization, embedded development, and other high-tech advances. Entrepreneurs, hobbyists, professionals and developers use Leap as a go-to Linux distribution as seen by the increase in usage from each minor release. Traversing from legacy software to more modern systems is imminent. Leap 15.5, which is based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5, will receive maintenance and security updates until the end of 2024. This will provide users with plenty of time to transition to the release’s successor; a successor has yet to be confirmed. Users interested in commercial support can use a new tool to transition to commercial support. Leap can be downloaded at get.opensuse.org. This release brings newer packages like Mesa and others, but Leap 15.5 is a non-feature release. Some of these newer packages to highlight include KDE Plasma 5.27, which is a Plasma Long Term Support version until the next one rolls out in 2024. Konqi lovers will enjoy a new welcome wizard, dynamic customization of desktop workspaces and more functionality with KRunner that includes a full desktop search, unit and currency exchange rate conversions, dictionary definitions, calculator features, and it shows graphical representations of mathematical functions. The Color Picker had a few improvements and added the possibility of displaying another preview color circle. KDE Gear 22.12.3 will be a new package in the release and complement the use of Plasma 5.27. The update fixes bugs with the Desktop Environment applications and highlights the enhancement of compression/decompression utility ark, improvements to text editor Kate and fixes some crashing of the video editor Kdenlive. Qt 5.15 LTS is available with the KDE Qt 5 patch collection. Text editor Vim will upgrade to a new major version. Vim 9 has a new script language that drastically improves performance. Increases in execution speed of 10 to 100 times is expected for the text editor. Users are recommended to read the project’s Vim 9.0 release information to know how the upgrade affects legacy scripts, backwards compatibility and other new features added in the release. For professionals configuring networking of Linux containers, the netavark 1.5.0 package is in the release. Users who have already transitioned to Flatpaks will have an updated 1.14.4 version that addresses a Common Vulnerability and Exposure with CVE-2023-28101. The newer version fixes the hiding of permissions for an attacker publishing a Flatpak app with malicious intent to elevate permissions. Leap 15.5 is set to have the OpenH264 repository enabled by default for all new installations thanks to contributions from Open Source at Cisco. Leap 15.5 comes with Linux Kernel 5.14.21 that including backports for this SUSE specific LTS kernel. Leap 15.5 shares the kernel with SLE 15 SP5 that receives the same fixes and backports along, which includes a few thousand other shared packages. The device firmware updater package fwupd will change to version 1.8.6. The newer version fixes compiling errors when building for s390x and ppc64le Good news for Python developers. Leap 15.5 users will have a fully usable Python 3.11 stack in parallel to the system Python (python36). This provides a more modern release for users and developers. Packagers are advised to switch to Python 3.11. Other packages users may notice a change to are updates of Ugrep 3.11.0 and NetworkManager 1.38.6. Both webkit2gtk3 and webkit2gtk4 will update to version 2.38.5. Mozilla’s internet browser Firefox will get a new Extended Support Release version - 102.9.0. Mozilla’s email client Thunderbird gains various visual and user experience improvements with version 102.8.0. End of Life openSUSE Leap 15.4 will have its End of Life (EOL) six months from today’s release. Users should update to openSUSE Leap 15.5 within six months of today to continue to receive security and maintenance updates. Important for users upgrading from previous versions A new 4096-bit RSA signing key was introduced as part of openSUSE Leap 15.5 as well as 15.4 via a maintenance update. Project Announces Plans for Another Minor Leap 15 Release

Hello openSUSE! We’d like to announce that the openSUSE Release team plans to work on openSUSE Leap 15.6. openSUSE Leap 15.6 is expected to be released in early June 2024 and would reach its end of life by the end of the year 2025. This decision was based on recent discussions at SUSE Labs and openSUSE Conference, and it reflects recent changes, progress on individual projects, and our new distribution *architect. This will also enable us to provide SUSE customers with an updated Package HUB module, as both SLES 15 SP5 and Leap 15.6 would be considered a feature release based on our *tick-tock release model. With a Leap 15.6, more time is given for efforts related to an ALP- based Leap 15.X *successor. A more detailed explanation of the situation at lkocman’s oSC2023 “Leap 16.0?” talk. Leap Micro 5.4 GA, Leap Micro 5.2 EOL, Leap 15.5 enters RC phase

openSUSE Leap 15.3 has reached end of life

Hi all, With the release of the last update (tor) on January 16th, 2023 the SUSE sponsored maintenance of openSUSE Leap 15.3 has ended. openSUSE Leap 15.3 is now officially discontinued and out of support by SUSE. The currently maintained stable release is openSUSE Leap 15.4, which will be maintained until around end of 2023 (same lifetime as SLES 15 SP4 regular support). This was the first release in the new "Closing the Leap Gap" model, where we reuse SUSE Linux Enterprise binaries directly for Leap and no longer rebuild their sources. We faced some issues: - openSUSE Leap 15.3 now imports from 3 different package sources (openSUSE Leap + SLE + openSUSE Backports) instead of just one. The initial product setup did not have all the repositories configured, we fixed that via a openSUSE-release package update. - The initial SLE update export method was not working well (basically all existing RPMs, with concatenated updateinfo) and resulted in lots of version related errors, so we switched to a different method in the first weeks. - The SLE repo contains all 4 architectures, and is growing very big in metadata, causing computers to loads double digit megabytes every day of metadata. This is still an unsolved issue with Leap 15.4. Some statistics on the released patches (compared to Leap 15.2), now also split between repos. I'd like to invite you to a newly formed Community Work Group (or CWG) around the new *Adaptable Linux Platform https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:ALP/Workgroups/Community We'll initially focus on transparency during ALP planning, prototyping, and related public communication, opensuse infra readiness . There are topics where we can already start working right now. The first desktop *workshop has shown us that we need to focus on areas such as single place for documentation, our "signature" look and feel, brand recognition, event calendar, etc. We will to turn feedback from the workshop into action items and ensure we have WG members working on them. We have a big opportunity in this regard since unlike SLES 15 , ALP is going to (and already being *prototyped) be built in OBS by default. Leap Micro 5.2 is GA!

Hello openSUSE! I'm happy to announce that our brand new distribution Leap Micro 5.2 is now Globally Available. More information and download links and deployment demo can be found at https://get.opensuse.org/leapmicro/5.2/ or our *release notes. Let me remind users that the main documentation source for Leap Micro is SLE Micro documentation referenced bellow. The same applies to Leap itself. We recommend to try our self-install image for VM and host deployments (see demo on download page). For security reasons images have no root password set so you'll have to use *ignition or combustion to set it up (unless you use the Offline installer). People who are interested in k3s use case should have a look at the recent *work of Atilla. the combustion should work on both SLE/Leap Micro and MicroOS. I would like to consider offering recommended combustion scripts as part of the image download/experience on get-o-o. Big thanks to all that participated! For the first time, Kubernetes <https://kubernetes.io/> is an official package in the release. This gives a huge boost to container orchestration capabilities, allowing users to automate deployments, scale, and manage containerized applications. Helm <https://helm.sh/>, the package manager for Kubernetes, is also added. Helm helps developers and system administrators manage complexity by defining, installing, and upgrading the most complex of Kubernetes applications. Container Runtime Interface (CRI) using Open Container Initiative (OCI) conformant runtimes (CRI-O) is also new to this release. CRI-O is a lightweight alternative to using Docker as the runtime, which allows Kubernetes to use any OCI-compliant runtime as the container runtime for running pods or processes running on a cluster. Even with Docker, the use of microservices will be secure thanks to more container packages arriving in this release. Cilium <https://cilium.io/> helps in transparently securing network connectivity and load-balancing between application containers and services deployed using Linux container frameworks like Docker and Kubernetes. Cilium provides an efficient way to define and enforce both the network-layer and the application-layer security policies, which are based on a container/pod identity. Leap 15.2 offers both Server and Transactional Server system roles. The Server system role uses a small set of packages that are suitable for servers with a text mode interface while the Transactional Server system role is similar to the Server role, but uses a read-only root filesystem to provide atomic, automatic updates of the system without interfering with the running system. Installation process The openSUSE installer remains as powerful and as versatile as ever, allowing to easily tweak every single aspect of the system including the mitigation for CPU based attacks like Spectre or Meltdown. The installation process presents several improvements like a more user-friendly dialog for selecting the system role, improved information about the installation progress, better compatibility with right-to-left languages like Arabic and many other small enhancements. In Leap 15.2, it offers a more accurate detection of MS Windows partitions encrypted with BitLocker and a better management of storage devices for Raspberry Pi.The installer also makes it easy to tweak the mitigation for CPU based attacks like Spectre or Meltdown. Unattended installations with AutoYaST is greatly improved. Many aspects are polished at all levels. More configuration options are added and the possible errors in the user’s profile and the installation process are now handled and reported in a more sensible and informative way. Improvements to YaST - The most complete configuration tool for Linux The YaST Partitioner remains the most powerful tool to configure all kinds of storage technologies in Linux, both during installation of the system or at any later point. This release incorporates the possibility of creating and managing a Btrfs file-system that expands over several devices, and the release allows for the use of more advanced encryption technologies. Leap 15.2 is the first openSUSE release to introduce a gradual change that splits system’s configuration between /usr/etc and /etc directories. YaST supports this new structure in all the affected modules, offering to system administrators a central point to inspect the configuration that will help them during the transition and beyond. Leap can be executed on top of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), delivering the power of openSUSE to the Windows world. The YaST version in Leap 15.2 improves the compatibility with that platform, specially when executing YaST Firstboot in order to perform all the needed initial adjustments. Desktop Environment While the desktop environments in this release will be new, the focus remains on more conservative fixed release. The Long-Term-Support version of KDE’s <https://kde.org/> Plasma 5.18 is available in Leap 15.2. The newer LTS has a significant amount of polish and new features. Notifications are clearer, settings are streamlined and the overall look is more attractive. Xfce <https://www.xfce.org/> has a minor update to version 4.14 after four plus years of development; the new version produced a slew of updates and features, including enhancements for the window manager, file manager, application finder and power management. Cloud Images, Hardware and Architectures Linode <https://www.linode.com/> cloud images of Leap are available today and ready for all infrastructure needs. Cloud hosting services will offer images of Leap 15.2 in the coming weeks like Amazon Web Services, Azure, Google Compute Engine and OpenStack. Leap 15 is continually optimized for cloud usage scenarios as a host and virtualization guest. TUXEDO Computers <https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/> and Linux notebooks can be purchase with Leap 15.2 preinstalled. Ports to other architectures like ARM64 and POWER are expected in the coming weeks. Core Components Compilers, scripting languages, system configuration tools and graphical user interfaces have all been improved. GNU Compiler Collection 7 through 9 are available in this newer Leap minor version along with an updated version of the 3D Graphics package Mesa to support the use of the professional grade operating system. Leap 15.2 has the same 234 version of systemd used in Leap 15.0 and 15.1. New graphics hardware support has been backported for the release of Leap 15.2 and Linux Kernel 5.3 will be used for the release. Kernel features automatically become available in Leap since the distribution shares the same kernel as SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE). openSUSE Leap 15.2 is a distribution with community packages built on top of core sources of SLE 15 Service Package 2. The shared common core and alignment with SLE makes migrations to SUSE’s enterprise product easy for professional who want to extend the life cycle of their maintenance and security past the life cycle of Leap. Migrating from the community version of Leap to SUSE Linux Enterprise is an available option for those who desire to migrate. The migration from openSUSE Leap server installations to SUSE Linux Enterprise is easy for system integrators developing on Leap code who may decide to move to an enterprise version for SLAs, certification, mass deployment, or extended Long Term Support. Health Packages This Leap release increases the capabilities of health services. The award-winning health- and hospital management system GNU Health comes in version 3.6.4. It has an updated GUI and is prepared for COVID-19 pandemic tracking, including updated ICD-10 codes and improved laboratory functions. GNU Health can directly interface with Orthanc, the free PACS Server, which is newly shipped in this release. Developers of the health and medical fields have several open-source tools with openSUSE Leap that can be be used for creating powerful User Interfaces (UI) and User Experiences (UX) for medical devices. Configuration Management System administrators will have the most up-to-date tools for configuration management. Salt 3000 has arrived in Leap; the new Salt version removes the date versioning and provides new functions to chroot: apply, sls, and highstate. It also updates slot syntax to support parsing dictionary responses and to append text. Ansible is also availble for sysadmins. Ansible works over SSH and does not require any software or daemons to be installed on remote nodes. Groupware and File Hosting File sharing and cloud services include software such as NextCloud and even the groupware application suite Kopano (formerly known as Zarafa) is part of the official Leap 15.2 repositories. Like prior versions, System Administrators and small businesses can use Leap for hosting web and mail servers or for network management with DHCP, DNS, NTP, Samba, NFS, LDAP, and hundreds of other services. Life Cycle of Leap Minor versions of the Leap 15 series have about an 18-month life cycle; minor releases come roughly once a year. Users of openSUSE Leap 15.1, which was released in May of 2019, should upgrade to Leap 15.2 within the next 6 months. The first release of Leap 15 was released two years ago. This includes identity management (= user accounts). The existing system that you likely have been using is split into two distinct systems (and hence accounts): (1) One for openSUSE infrastructure and SUSE's development tools, think Bugzilla, Build Service (OBS), openSUSE Wiki,... (2) And one for SUSE's customers and partners, think SUSE Customer Center (SCC), Partner Portal,... Ad (1): Details on the transition for Bugzilla and other openSUSE systems are available at https://idp-portal-info.suse.com. That page is going to be updated regularly -> a good bookmark. Different services migrate one by one over the coming weeks, so be prepared to still use your "old" account in some places during that transition. [opensuse-announce] Bringing Leap and SUSE Linux Enterprise closer together - a proposal

Hi everyone, today I have some exciting news and a proposal to relay: SUSE wants to go another step in openness towards the openSUSE community and suggests to bring the relationship of openSUSE Leap and SUSE Linux Enterprise to a new level. Internally this idea is called "Closing the Leap Gap" and proposes to strengthen and bring more closely together: * developer communities, by focusing on openSUSE Leap as a development platform for communities and industry partners; * user communities, by leveraging the benefits of both a stable Enterprise code base and the speed of community contributions; * the code bases of openSUSE Leap and SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE), by not only sharing sources, but also offering the SUSE Linux Enterprise binaries for inclusion in openSUSE Leap. The proposal includes a three step approach: 1. Merge the code bases for the intersection of openSUSE Leap 15.2 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP2 as much as possible without loss of functionality or stability. (SUSE has started a cleanup process on the SUSE Linux Enterprise side already.) 2. In parallel to classic openSUSE Leap 15.2 create a flavor leveraging SLE binaries, leading to an intermediate release in the October 2020 time frame. 3. Build openSUSE Leap 15.3 with SLE binaries included by default (assuming community agreement). As you can imagine, a number of people have been involved with this so far, and I'd like to pull some of them in front of the curtain in a little interview. Q: Thomas, all of engineering at SUSE reports to you, and I know openSUSE is something you care about quite a bit. What is SUSE putting on the table here? Thomas Di Giacomo: Let me step back, and give you a perspective as I see it. SUSE for 27+ years has been a part of global open source ecosystem that includes a vast number of developers, end users, communities, and organizations of all sizes working together and benefiting from the collective work. Most of our engineers are involved as well with some open source communities that they feel passionate about. Open source communities are an integral part of who we are and the ecosystem we serve. Naturally, we feel responsible to support the communities and the work done by them. openSUSE is no different and is actually even more special and very dear to SUSE. So, it should come as no surprise that we are fully committed towards the openSUSE project(s) and its community. It makes us all feel proud to see Leap and Tumbleweed grow and evolve, together with SUSE Linux Enterprise. This effort of our engineers working together with others in the openSUSE community will benefit everyone involved for many years to come. Q: And why are you doing this? Thomas: We want open source to succeed for everyone – developers, contributors to end users and everyone in between. The benefits of open source are tremendous when the ecosystem grows as a result of the positive virtuous cycle of – contributing more, supporting the contributions, benefiting from contributions, which inspires more people contributing, and it goes on to grow as an upward virtuous spiral. We feel fortunate to be in the position of seeing the openSUSE community grow in tandem with the success of SUSE Linux Enterprise, and both feeding off each other to grow even more. This idea definitely goes in that direction. Now, let me defer to Matthias who came up with this idea. Q: Okay, so, Matthias, first of all: what is your role at SUSE? Matthias Eckermann: I am leading the Product Management team for Linux platforms, covering SUSE Linux Enterprise, Edge, and Security. Q: And what made you propose this? Matthias: My team and I realized that the engagement of our SLE business with the openSUSE community does not fully fit our view on openness, and that mutual benefits are not leveraged sufficiently. We discussed what it would take to bridge the gap and bring the relationship to the next level. Beyond a common ground on the technical side, the code streams, this requires learning from each other; for example, we need to re-establish an open feature process between community, SUSE, and our industry partners. Thus we developed "Closing the Leap Gap", and - to test whether it might have a chance to fly - we outlined the initial idea with the openSUSE Board before going for approvals by SUSE management. Q: You mention the board, so let me ask. What is your take? What opportunities, benefits do you see? What risks? Dr. Axel Braun: With this change, we can make better use of our resources, as two code bases converge - so one build target less to consider. Everyone who packages for Leap and for Package Hub will immediately benefit from this. Marina Latini: It's really exciting to see how SUSE is trying to increase its support for Leap, reducing the existing differences between our openSUSE Leap and SLE. I can see this proposal as a way to be more inclusive, giving to the community the opportunity to contribute in an easier way to Leap and giving the chance to bring the openSUSE spirit also in an Enterprise product like SLE. On the other hand, every new move is a change and we need to be sure that the changes won't limit our community freedom to submit packages to Leap or won't slow down Leap for following the internal SUSE development model. Q: Matthias, that sounds like some extra effort required. How is SUSE contributing, what is SUSE committing to? Matthias: Indeed, there is quite some one-time effort needed to get (back) to the common ground; this is covered by SUSE engineering teams; two groups are heavily involved: The Open Build Service experts are designing a workflow for a smooth integration of the binaries, and for reducing the long term maintenance efforts for our community contributors. SUSE release managers and packagers are working hard to synchronize the code bases without losing functionality or quality. Hundreds of change requests have been filed already, and to get this done properly, we are delaying the release of SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP2 to July. And we are willing to invest more, to drive the idea to success quickly: we would take the burden, to create an intermediate openSUSE Leap release in October 2020 which then would incorporate SUSE Linux Enterprise binaries into Leap the first time. Probably, Adrian can comment on the Build Service aspects, and Lubos what it means to developers within SUSE and to the community release process? Q: So, Lubos, as release manager for Leap, what have you been doing so far, and what is the impact you see? Lubos Kocman: I spent most of the time on collecting data regarding SLE and Leap differences and having follow-up discussions and transforming feedback into action items. Max and the rest of the openSUSE release engineering team meanwhile did an excellent job of keeping Leap release activities going forward. The idea of re-using should generally lower the effort on the Leap side. However, it comes with the price of increased complexity to bring all pieces together. A new process will allow external contributors to file feature or update requests directly to SLE. This will already help a lot. Q: Is this an outcome bound effort, or time bound? I know the SLE release schedule is a bit like a 300m tanker. Lubos: It's both. I see this as a balance between what can we deliver, how, and to what date. It took quite some effort to create a plan acceptable by all involved teams. Splitting the work across the upcoming two releases seemed to be accepted well at least by involved parties so far. Q: So, that is SLE 15 SP2. How about Leap 15.2? Lubos: openSUSE Leap 15.2 will have to slip by about 8 weeks to incorporate all changes from the SLE and align with its new schedule. I believe that the release will find a great use for extra time since we're still finishing the refresh of packages from Factory. The prototype will be meanwhile available in parallel to the openSUSE Leap 15.2. Q: How is that research proceeding, Adrian? Adrian Schröter: We have an idea about the setup in build.opensuse.org. I anticipate to have a first prototype of the build setup in next three weeks. And more important is how to develop the workflows to allow a more collaborative joint effort between SLE and openSUSE development. However, we must keep in mind that this is really an entire new way to develop a distribution. On one hand it makes a lot of sense to integrate for example the SUSE Backports (aka Package Hub) people directly in our development process. This will make our distribution development stronger. On the other hand, we also must find ways how to solve new problems. For example how to keep our builds for architectures not covered by SLES like Arm 32bit and RISC-V. Also the turn around times of submissions and build results will be a challenge in the initial setup. And last but not least, the installed systems and users may need to deal with more repositories. But we have one year to work on these problems in parallel to our stable distribution. And we are indeed looking forward to make openSUSE and SLE development more beneficial than ever. [opensuse-announce] Changing the Chair of the Board

Dear Community, After six years on the openSUSE Board and five as its Chairperson, I have decided to step down as Chair of the openSUSE Board effective today, August 19. This has been a very difficult decision for me to make, with reasons that are diverse, interlinked, and personal. Some of the key factors that led me to make this step include the time required to do the job properly, and the length of time I've served. Five years is more than twice as long as any of my predecessors. The time required to do the role properly has increased and I now find it impossible to balance the demands of the role with the requirements of my primary role as a developer in SUSE, and with what I wish to achieve outside of work and community. As difficult as it is to step back from something I've enjoyed doing for so long, I am looking forward to achieving a better balance between work, community, and life in general. Serving as member and chair of the openSUSE Board has been an absolute pleasure and highly rewarding. Meeting and communicating with members of the project as well as championing the cause of openSUSE has been a joyous part of my life that I know I will miss going forward. openSUSE won't get rid of me entirely. While I do intend to step back from any governance topics, I will still be working at SUSE in the Future Technology Team. Following SUSE's Open Source policy, we do a lot in openSUSE. I am especially looking forward to being able to focus on Kubic & MicroOS much more than I have been lately. As I'm sure it's likely to be a question, I wish to make it crystal clear that my decision has nothing to do with the Board’s ongoing efforts to form an independent openSUSE Foundation. The Board’s decision to form a Foundation had my complete backing as Chairperson, and will continue to have as a regular openSUSE contributor. I have absolute confidence in the openSUSE Board; Indeed, I don't think I would be able to make this decision at this time if I wasn't certain that I was leaving openSUSE in good hands. On that note, SUSE has appointed Gerald Pfeifer as my replacement as Chair. Gerald is SUSE's EMEA-based CTO, with a long history as a Tumbleweed user, an active openSUSE Member, and upstream contributor/maintainer in projects like GCC and Wine. Gerald has been a regular source of advice & support during my tenure as Chairperson. In particular, I will always remember my first visit to FOSDEM as openSUSE Chair. Turning up more smartly dressed than usual, I was surprised to find Gerald, a senior Director at SUSE, diving in to help at the incredibly busy openSUSE booth, and doing so dressed in quite possibly the oldest and most well-loved openSUSE T-shirt I've ever seen. When booth visitors came with questions about SUSE-specific stuff, I think he took some glee in being able to point them in my direction while teasingly saying "Richard is the corporate guy here, I'm just representing the community.." Knowing full well he will continue being so community minded, while finally giving me the opportunity to tease him in return, it is with a similar glee I now hand over the reigns to Gerald. As much as I'm going to miss things about being chairperson of this awesome community, I'm confident and excited to see how openSUSE evolves from here. Hi folks, This is the advance discontinuation notice for openSUSE Leap 42.3. On June 30th 2019 the openSUSE Leap 42 release series will reach its end of life, after 4 years of lifetime (42.1 was released in fall 2015). openSUSE Leap 42.3 will receive no further maintenance or security updates after that date. It is recommended for openSUSE Leap users to upgrade to the recently released openSUSE Leap 15.1. Deployments with software that relies on Leap 42 technology and cannot be moved to 15 right now may consider evaluating a (commercial) SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP4 subscription and migrate the workload to SUSE Linux Enterprise. [opensuse-announce] Post Mortem on openSUSE Leap 15.0 update problems

Hi folks, This is a post mortem on the 15.0 Update problems from last Friday / weekend. On Friday morning german time, a otherwise inconspicious but incorrect configuration change (to enable gcc8 to build for i586) caused a full wipe of the 15.0 update project and projects linking to it. The 15.0 update project on our download servers got emptied due to this. This was spotted an hour later, and we went into recovery mode. First we restored a previous static state that was made available in the Friday afternoon, 2 hours after we noticed the problem. As there is no backup or snapshotting of binaries we had to reestablish the binary state in a more manual way. We used the existing 15.0 update binaries left over by the wipe to reestablish all existing updates. This reestablishing however caused resigning of the packages. The content is still binary identical, but the cryptographic signature is different. It is signed by the same key, but a different random nonce caused a different Hmac. As the filename was still the same, not all mirrors synced the newly released packages, which caused "bad digest" messages on repositories until Monday morning. Then we changed the update project layout to include a "rpms/" directory, so every mirror refetches the RPMs and will only offer the correct RPMs. With Monday 10:00 am everything should be working as expected again. Note that every RPM released has the binary identical content as the ones before, just the checksum is different due to resigning. We have some learning experiences from that: - more careful use of dangerous config options of course - establish binary backup and snapshot strategy for the OBS, which was currently not there (due to lack of budget). - we will fix several bugs that made this problem worse then necessary We are sorry for the inconviences caused by this problem. Hello people of openSUSE after the longest election period in the history of the project elections ended in a successful way. 237 people voted out of 400 which is a record of participation both in percentage and in actual number. It was the first year we attempted to vote through Helios Voting System and we solved all problems that came to our attention. I must say that although the work of the election committee ends somewhere around here the new elected members have a long way ahead of them and us as the election committee wish them all the best. [opensuse-announce] Leap 15 going Beta, help test and report bugs!

Hi, Leap 15 finally got a fresh look and with a Plasma 5.12 beta version the default desktop environment got close to the target version. The base system also is pretty much complete. There are still two bigger changes known to be upcoming. One is rpm 4.14 that was only included in Tumbleweed two weeks ago. The other one is the combined /var subvolume for fresh installations. So overall Leap 15 now enters the Beta phase with Build 109.3 that reached the mirrors on Friday. Everyone is encouraged to download¹ the current builds and help testing. In fact, this announcement was sent from a Leap 15.0 system already :-) As with 42.3, Leap 15.0 will also use a rolling development model until it's final build. That means no concrete milestones but new builds as soon as openQA² gives a green light. Watch out for announcements of new builds on the opensuse-factory mailinglist³. A known issue is, that upgrades from older versions lead to file conflict errors with renamed packages. So testing should focus on fresh installs until that is fixed. Also, when installing as dual boot with Windows on UEFI, the Windows entry may be missing from the bootloader menu. Since this is a major update compared to 42, this time even more testing is required! Please check your your own use case, work load, software deployment, hardware support etc early so there's a chance left to get it fixed before the release. To help with that, live images are in the works and will be announced separately when ready. Also, please have a look at the test plan⁴ and report your findings there. Use bugzilla to report bugs⁵. Issues that deserve discussion in a broader audience should be taken to the opensuse-factory mailinglist. If you are maintaining a package in Factory that is not in Leap 15 yet, feel free to submit it to openSUSE:Leap:15.0. Contrariwise if your package ended up in Leap 15 while it shouldn't, please talk to the release team⁶. Regarding the schedule, the goal would be to be ready to release in May. Since the openSUSE conference is there too, it would be a good opportunity to work together to apply some final polishing. Especially documentation in the wiki, release notes and translations. After a bug screening session the decision whether to release or not would be made at the conference. With that, the beta phase would last from now until mid April. Bigger version updates should be done by end of February to leave some time for testing. End users can choose the cloud service provider that best fits their usage model. Leap ships with tools foruploading and managing images <https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/amazon-image-management-improved/>. The tools allow for uploading, publishing, deleting and deprecating images. There are a couple of known things not working at the moment like the “gcloud” command in the GCE image and the automatic hostname setting in the GCE image, Both will be worked on as time permits, Schweikert wrote. Cloud images of openSUSE have been available in for years and users can run Docker containers in a Virtual Machine with openSUSE’s cloud image; this has been tested with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12, which shares a common core with openSUSE Leap. Since releasing openSUSE Leap 42.2 in the AWS Marketplace, around mid January, roughly 220 subscribers are running openSUSE Leap. AWS customers have an opportunity to use openSUSE’s community software on AWS without any hourly-software instance charge.

Dear openSUSE Community, sometimes plans change while you are working on them ;-) The plan for yesterday evening was to move and update some of the localized wikis. Things worked better and faster than expected, and in the end we moved *all 18 localized wikis* from Provo to Nuremberg and updated them to MediaWiki 1.27 :-) This means *all* openSUSE wikis are now running on MediaWiki 1.27 and support the features announced for the english wiki last week [1]. I didn't have time to change the <feed> tags to the new <rss> tags in all wikis yet. I'll do that in the next days, but I won't complain if someone is faster and does it in some of the wikis ;-) (use the search to find pages containing "<feed", and check https://en.opensuse.org/Help:RSS_feeds for the <rss> syntax) For those who are interested in statistics: - moving 18 wikis in about 6 hours means about 20 minutes per wiki - can someone beat this? ;-) - during the move, we wrote about 500 lines on IRC to coordinate everything - this helped to keep the read-only time of each wiki short - I'd guess on average each wiki was read-only for 30 minutes (again, can someone beat this? ;-) - we moved about 10 GB of uploaded files and 1.6 GB of mysql dumps from Provo to Nuremberg yesterday (which was sometimes "funny" because the server in Provo limits the connection to 10 MBit) And now - have fun with the updated wikis and the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.3! Hi all, With the release of release-notes-openSUSE on May 17th, 2017 the SUSE sponsored maintenance of openSUSE Leap 42.1 has ended. openSUSE Leap 42.1 is now officially discontinued and out of support by SUSE. Hello all, The situation with that led to the distribution of openSUSE infrastructure the last few days has been resolved. The shutdown of openSUSE infrastructure was triggered by SUSE's Corporate policies designed to err on the side of caution in order to protect their assets and our data. We're pleased to be able to report that after an extensive review and audit of the systems involved we are confident that nothing was compromised and all of our code and personal information housed within was adequately protected throughout. Therefore all of the systems that were shut down are now back online. We apologise for the inconvenience or confusion caused. I'd also like to thank everyone for their understanding, and especially thank our admins who worked tirelessly over the weekend to investigate and restore services as quickly as possible. [opensuse-announce] Several openSUSE services disabled due to a security breach

Dear openSUSE Community, We have been informed of a security breach of the MF authentication system used by several openSUSE services. As a result, the openSUSE services using this authentication method are immediately being set to read-only mode/preventing authentication. This includes the openSUSE OBS, wiki, and forums. The scope and impact of the breach is not yet fully clear. The disabling of authentication is to ensure the protection of our systems and user data while the situation is fully investigated. Based on the information available at this time, there is a possibility that the breach is limited to users of non-openSUSE infrastructure that shares the same authentication system. Regardless, is recommended that all users of the affected services and openSUSE bugzilla change their password at the following link: https://secure-www.novell.com/selfreg/jsp/protected/manageAccount.jsp https://status.opensuse.org/ can be used to monitor the status of the services as the incident is further investigated. We do not believe any of the openSUSE Download infrastructure has been compromised, as it does not interact with the MF authentication system. [opensuse-announce] openSUSE Leap's Next Major Version Number

Hi all, On behalf of the openSUSE Board and Leap Release Management I am pleased to announce the next version of openSUSE Leap after 42.3 will be: openSUSE Leap 15 As with Leap 42.x, minor releases are expected annually for at least 3 years, so you can expect a Leap 15.1 to follow, then 15.2 and onwards. Obviously this is quite a dramatic change from the current version number of 42.x, so I will explain what justifies this change in some detail below. First, some history. When we started openSUSE Leap, the version number was an issue that needed addressing. openSUSE at that time was at 13.2, but SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) was at 12 and heading towards 12 SP1. As the main unique selling point of Leap compared to every other distribution is the fact it is based on SLE sources. We wanted to reflect that in the version number. This was particularly important when you consider that a major version in SLE really means something ("major architectural changes from the last version are introduced here") whereas minor versions/service packs have a very different message ("easy to upgrade to, no major workflow breaking changes"). Leap follows a similar philosophy, so we wanted a versioning scheme to reflect SLEs. But openSUSE had already had versions starting with 12, so we couldn't sync up with SLE. This is where 42.x came from. It gave us the opportunity to establish a relationship with SLE versions (SLE Version + 30 = Leap Version), reflect the major/minor nature of Leap releases, and avoid clashes with version numbers we'd already used. The choice of 42 doubled as a humorous nod to hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and the first version numbers of SuSE Linux and YaST (4.2 and 0.42 respectively). The plan was therefore for the next version of Leap to be 43 with it's release aligned with SLE 13, followed by Leap 43.1 (with SLE 13 SP1), Leap 43.2 (w. SP2), etc However, like all good plans, things change. SUSE have decided that their next version of SLE will be 15, not 13. Upon learning of SUSE's plans the Board and Leap release team have been considering our options. This included ignoring the changes to SLE and releasing Leap 43 as planned, at the cost of the link between SLE versions and Leap versions. 45 was also considered, as were some frankly hilarious ideas that made me worry about my own sanity and that of my fellow contributors. After considering the pros and cons of all the options however, the decision has been that Leap 15 will be our next version. SUSE's decision to skip SLE 13 and 14 gave us a perfect opportunity to sync up with SLE versions like we always wanted to originally with Leap. It's an opportunity we will not be able to take so easily a few years from now if we continued with Leaps current versioning. There are only a few packages in our distribution that reference the 42.x versioning, and they should be easily handled as part of a zypper dup, so we are not concerned about this decision impacting users upgrading. We are aware that this decision could be a minor annoyance for users of Leap with configuration management tools like saltstack and puppet, but the long term opportunity to simplify such configuration (by being able to treat SLE and Leap similarly) outweighed our desire to avoid a 'one-time' effort for people currently handling the overly complicated situation caused by Leap being at 42.x and SLE being at 12 SPx. Packagers should be able to look forward to an easier time of things as a result of this change. We intend to deprecate the 0%{leap_version} macro and simplify the current complex nest of suse_version and sle_versions that can make it very frustrating to build packages appropriately for Tumbleweed, Leap and SLE. 0%{suse_version} should continue to be available as a simple indicator of the major version of Leap & SLE for packagers (eg, 0%{suse_version} == 1500 is the expected value for SLE 15 and Leap 15 and all of their minor versions/service packs). 0%{sle_version} should remain as a more precise indicator when packagers need to handle specific versions of Leap and SLE (eg. 0%{sle_version} == 150000 is the expected value for SLE 15 & Leap 15, with 150100 being the expected value for SLE 15 SP1 & Leap 15.1) 0%{is_opensuse} will continue for those times when packagers need to distinguish between Leap and SLE even though they will now more closely share their versions. The above examples and what the future suse_version number will be for Tumbleweed is not yet final, so expect to see emails from ludwig in opensuse-factory(a)opensuse.org when they are set. Thanks to everyone involved in this so far, I'm looking forward to seeing what we make out of Leap 15, and even though I cross-posted this I would like to ask that any followup conversation is kept to the opensuse-project(a)opensuse.org thread. During that time, sending or receiving mails to the openSUSE mailing lists, or viewing their archives will not be possible. All the mails that will be sent during the downtime will be delayed. The reason for the downtime is to apply major upgrades to both the operating system and the mailing list software. We will let you know of the final status with a followup announcement. [opensuse-announce] Statement Regarding the openSUSE Board Election

Due to the technical issues with connect.opensuse.org duplicating names on the candidate list for the election while simultaniously removing some others, the Board election remains on hold. Satisfactorily debugging the root cause of the problems has proven to be impossible. The volunteers working on this investigation were hidered by a temporary outage of the MySQL database during the time they had available for their investigation. While all tests seem to suggest connect.opensuse.org is working satisfactorily at the moment, there is insufficient confidence that it can be trusted for the next Board election. We have wanted to replace connect.opensuse.org for some while, but despite this desire no one has stepped up with a viable alternative. As we need to elect a new board with some urgency, we do not have the luxury of time to continue waiting. Therefore Martin Pluskal will be urgently investigating the use of an alternative service for this particular election, such as SurveyMonkey. As only openSUSE Members can vote, this will likely require using the email addresses in connect.opensuse.org to email members and direct them with an individual, one-time-use, link to the poll. Martin will provide the details once his investigations into suitable tools is complete.
