[opensuse-amd64] Installing SUSE 10.1 x64 on a new machine

Hi, I have installed SUSE 10.1 on my new AM2 motherboard machine. I have had an unexpected problem: When I boot the machine up, it powers off. When the init starts, it tries to acheive level 5, but there is a yellow "warning" when it gets to that part of the boot, then it just sends an init 0 and the machine shuts down. I am a linux newbie, but i want to learn how to use it! Can anyone give me a hand? I've trawled the archives for a bit and found nowt! Sounds like your X display is not configured correctly, but you have not told us what equipment you have. Especially, what video card? note: there is much more traffic in the opensuse@opensuse.org list and many x86_64 users there, including me. You will probably find more information available quicker there. ps: I have a 4200+ X2 SMP with NVidia GeForce 7300 GS which works fine, but some people have problems with various ATI based cards. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

I doubt it is X as that *should* not cause a restart. You can add the parameter "3" at the boot screen which will boot into runlevel 3 where X does not run. Did the install work ok and you are only have problem booting after the install happened? Did you get to the part in the install where you specify root password? Of course the best in such a situation is to get the serial console output if possible [1]. -joachim [1] http://en.opensuse.org/Serial_Null_Modem_Connection --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

I found the problem! ACPI was having issues with my motherboard. I changed some settings in the cpufreq files as suggested by a log file and disabled the ACPI settings - it works fine! Now i want to set up some network shares on my windows workgroup. I have the shares visible, but it wants usernames and passwords - which i dont understand what it wants! The linux newbie goes on.... I use samba, but I would hazzard a guess that it wants the windoz user username/password....

Set up Windows-compatible passwords on Linux with # smbpasswd -a username Otherwises you would use the Linux username/password. The advantage of the smbpasswd solution is that will allow automatic access to your samba shares without having to login each time (on Windows).
