Thanks for the info. Here if only one user is logged in (kdm), then switching between consoles and the GUI is no problem. Looks like the only solution is going back to nVidia :) I'll wait for another opinions of course, and maybe I'll go trough the hassle to file a report at ATI, even if they have made this process so hard and unfriendly.

I think it might be something with the X series of cards. My older 9800pro didn't have this problem.

The problem: Using the switch user option of KDE to start a new kdm for a second user to login works OK, The user can login. Looks like the problem is with the ati proprietary driver, as if I uninstall it and use the generic one, everything works just fine.

Do someone have such a problem? Is it isolated only to the 64bit version, or it happen with the 32 bit as well?

On my 32-bit system (9800 Pro) [everything latest] I can switch between users (Alt7-8) without problem. [However, screen F8 is not 3D hardware accelerated.] On my 64-bit system (X800 PCIE) [everything latest] I have the same problem as you. My bypass is to go to another desktop in F7 and there 'su' to the other user. The only clue is in /var/log/Xorg.20.log: the fglrx message "Failed to initialize UMM driver"; and at the end messages from AUDIT three times: "client 3 rejected from local host" "Auth name: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 ID: -1"

Any suggestions how to solve/or at least debug and try to solve the problem? ATI's site is horrible, so before I even try to deal with them, I'd like to receive as much as possible information.

No suggestions. But on the ATI site I once had a complaint, and they were quick and courteous in explaining what I had done wrong. [I had to navigate around to find where to communicate with ATI -- I think the page was called "Feedback" or something like that.] mikus
