With a LiDE30 I found I had to update to a newer SANE to get good colour. The version that came with SuSE 9.0 download edition was pretty old.
IF you want to try a newer version without building it yourself you can try my RPM from http://shawnd.dyndns.org/files/sane-1.0.13-0.pm.3.x86_64.rpm
