Ok, I am at a loss. I am having increasingly frequent disk timeouts which have caused me to have to rebuild my system, and now I can't even boot the re-installed system. Its a VIA K8 Albatron MB with a maxtor 200G drive. The major symptom is that I have a clicking sound from the drive that seems to be the heads parking whenever it locks up and the sound then cycles every 30 seconds after that. I've tried 2.6.5 kernel with only worse results. I've tried turning off DMA, ACPI, APM, POLL, etc individually. With the failsafe boot it will work indefinitely without lock-up (or left overnight in install state) so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. Turning off APM and ACPI together seems to make it much better. I thought this was the DMA issue with VIA, but using 2.6.5 with/without DMA turned off still produces the same result. It does give a dma_timeout error on boot if dma is turned on in the bios, but turning dma off in bios (and kernel) does not solve the problem, it only gets rid of the message. And this seems to occur whether the sda scsi emulated driver is used or the hda driver is used, IE changing the initrd lines to point to a different via_sata and libata. Suggestions? This drive is supposed to support hypertransport, so I have a problem with just dumping it for an IDE drive, but I'm out of ideas at this point. Thanks.

Dear Sir, How to use Ghost 8.0 to clone the Suse SLES 8.0 AMD64 OS HDDs ?? After clone process is complete, the new duplicated system hold on GRUB . It 's seem that GRUB crashed . Additional, how to use rescue mode to rebuild the GRUB. Regards, Jack

ECC error detection and Kernel Question

We have seen a problem with copying a large volume between machines and the resulting volume having a different checksum than the source volume. We found a bad DIMM on the target machine using memtest, but we now have questions that need answers for our users. Since the memory controller is built in to the Opteron, and the Opteron uses ECC memory, is the ECC correction done at the hardware level via the memory controller ? Is this dependent on the motherboard chipset, or are the options the same regardless of chipset due to the controller being built onto the processor ? I seem to remember seeing some messages about whether or not to turn on background scrubbing on the ECC system at the BIOS level. Are there problems with the Linux kernel doing this, or is just a memory latency issue due to overhead ? If the hardware controller cannot correct the error, does it raise an exception to the OS ? If so, does the Linux kernel catch the signal ? Log the error, or crash the system ? Is this configurable ? We have a mix of the UnitedLinux kernel 2.4.19-smp, SuSE 9.0 2.4.21-193-smp, and the 2.4.22 kernel from kernel.org. Do these kernels need to be ECC aware to catch sny signals, and if so, are they ? Building openssh...

Getting this particular version of openssh built isn't too critical to me, but I've just moved to the AMD64 platform and I'm figuring what applies here will probably help out in the future. But I don't think that's it. It stops completely if I boot in failsafe and I can compile a new kernel & install without problems in failsafe, etc. That would not seem to suggest hardware if its doing it so often outside of failsafe. Also, looking through list archives last night I noticed the acoustic info posted a while back. My drive, Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9, is not listed in the e-mail, but when I visited the maxtor site and did a search in their knowledgebase on acoustic, the DiamondMax Plus9 is listed as one of the drives that implement this "feature." I downloaded the amset utility to see if I could unset that just in case, but the amset will not scan past IDE controllers 0&1, and SATA controllers are IDE 2&3 on my system at least. This could be a possible cause I guess, but it just dosn't make sense to me, and I still have no way to fix it if it is. SuSe 9.0+scilab

Hello all, I am running a dual opteron 244 1.8GHz machine with Suse 9.0 (kernel 2.4.21-211-smp) and when trying to run scilab (version 2.7-120) this program allocates all available virtual memory until the machine crashes. I noticed a similar behaviour was reported under 8.2 beta last year, is there any work around or is there something misconfigured in my machine ??? These 2 dimms, when populated, are almost touching, while the other have a decent space between them. This probably isn't a huge deal but it worried me a little. The tyan board has a space between all 8 dimm slots. One final nit-pick in the HDAMA. Accelertech's website (www.accelertech.com) has been down for over a week now and is still down. Python and Suse AMD 64

I am a big fan of Suse Linux and also a huge python fan, unfortunately my one gig of memory goes quickly when in C mode :) and I can't get the hard drive to work enough (most of the time I don't see anything churning away because I don't do a lot of file work I guess its my main weekness at the moment. The install for most people will be the most the file system gets used (and booting applications) thats how fast my dualy 140 is. It takes a C app to bring it to its knees (no inline threads please). Balancing the machine in realtime might be a cool hack... Is there *any* way to make a process run in compressed memory aka not the hard drive?< I know futile manuever but python just takes up so much memory.
