Installation of Suse 9 for AMD64

Hy, I'am back to report my experiences by installing Suse 9 AMD64 on my K8V deluxe with two 1614c drives system ... OK, Last Status in the List is that I finally reached YAST but the System told me, that there were no disks found. So I canceled the job. The process took me to a DOS-typed blue Interface called "Linux rc" or "rcLinux" or someting like that. I tried the driver section to manually install a SATA Driver and "surprising" there was a VIA SATA driver chooseable. After that I started again Installation and YAST found the two SATA drives. I agreed with the default proposal that YAST gave me to go on installing. After pressing "next" I got the message that the process can't go on unless some changes have been done. I have no imagination which changes I shall do, so I also tried some manual modifications as described in the user manual supplied in my AMD64 DVD parcel, including formating etc. But no way, always this same message "process can't go on unless some changes have been done" (-> this is a translation, I used german install language) Any Ideas ? As I've got to 160GB drives, I formerly intended to boot with XP from the first drive or optional from the second drive with Linux. So I don't care to format the second drive in any way it will be "comfortable" for my little Linux 9 ... ;-) Any comments will be apprechiated ... I want to get this OS finitely running ... Serial-ATA under amd64 suse

Hello, I've just found out the hard way that Suse doesn't support serial ATA drives under 9.2 for the AMD64 version. I got Suse because Mandrake doesn't have any support at all and the PPP via modem doesn't work under Mandrakes AMD64 version. It does support serial ATA though. Does anyone know how I could patch Suse to see a serial ATA drive, and load over Mandrake? I don't mind repartitioning and formatting - I'm dealing with a new system. I asked support what it would cost to create a patch, and they want to know the details of the what chip set is on the disk drive. Since the bios can see the disk, this shouldn't matter - it's just calls to bios for track and sector reads. Thanks for any suggestions. Mike Rosing

Most current Version of AMD64

Hello, I am trying to unravel the mix of SuSE versions that support AMD64. Currently, I can see Suse Beta 8.2, UnitedLinux 1.0, and SuSE 9.0 - all for AMD64. Which is considered the current version that we should be looking at. Regards, Matthew

Mark Adams. << I believe that the patch CD is for installation on an SATA system disk, right? My system has an IDE disk and an SATA disk. I installed to the IDE drive - the patch CD was not available at the time (mid-November). I was impatient for SATA support and I read a thread here about the 3ware card. I ordered one, installed it & was able to partition & mount the drive. Sometime after that, I read that a kernel update had made the Via SATA controller active - I have not bothered to try it since the 3ware card is working fine. As a humorous aside - when my v9.0-64 came in the mail. I wondered where the other CDs were (there was only one in the box). My CD drive wouldn't read it & I was frustrated until I inspected the "CD" and read "DVD-1". Well, a mad rush up to Fry's before they closed netted me a DVD-ROM and, eventually, a working system. Sheesh - I vaguely remembered that fact from when I ordered the product but completely forgot it when it arrived. So, actually, I'm good except for the sound... 8^( ......Chuck

Sophos Antivirus on Suse 9.0

Hi! I am trying to install Sophie on a machine with Sophos, but it has problems. ld complaints, that it cannot find -lsavi lirbary and fails. How can I check if sophost library is working OK on Suse 9.0 x86_64? Did anyone make Sophos work with sophie? MIaln

Tcl abd TclX

I am slowly moving stuff that I have working on a Red Hat 7.3 system to the Suse 9.0-64 system. One item that I can't find is the Tcl executable. The packages that are installed show up as: tcl-devel-8.4.4-33 tcl-8.4.4-33 tcllib-1.4-56 tclplug-3.0-117 itcl-3.3-277 tcl-32bit-9.0-0 spectcl-1.1-706 tclx-8.4-220 vtcl-1.5.2-331 In the old RH system, there is an executable: /usr/bin/tcl Actually: /usr/bin/tcl /usr/bin/tclhelp /usr/bin/tclsh All I find on 9.0-64 is: /usr/bin/tclsh@ /usr/bin/tclsh8.4* (tclsh is a link to tclsh8.4) Is there a link or an environmental variable that I am missing? Is tclsh the same as the tcl executable? I know that Tcl is running somehow 'cause tuxracer runs and it has Tcl buried in it... All help/advice appreciated. ......Chuck

Compiling RAID module for x86_64

Hello, I am trying to get the RAID module compiled for SuSE 9.0 for use with an Athlon64. The RAID controller is a Highpoint 1820. They supply the source to compile your own module, but, I do not have access to a machine that can compile it for the x86_64. Possible RAID card problem (heard that one before?)

Using SLES 8, patched up to SP3 and beyond on a Rioworks HDAMA board with dual Opteron 242 and 4GB Ram. Disk is a 3ware 7500-8 with 5x200GB disks set up as a RAID5 with one redundant disk. Mainboard BIOS flashed up, brand new firmware on the controller, running the newest driver version (compiled for SMP x86-64 and gently slid into the module tree and initrd). I'm seeing real performance issues, though. [OT] Hard disk device changes with kernel 2.6

I'm Sorry for the off-topic, because I use SuSE 9.0, 32 bits Athlon. The problem is with a mobo Asus A7V600 and the VIA VT8237 chipset controller. I have any SATA hard disk, and I have disabled in the bios the via sata controller. When i boot with kernel 2.4, the 2 ide hard disks are /dev/hda and /dev/hdb, but when i boot with kernel 2.6 (Kraxel 2.6.2), they appear as /dev/hde and /dev/hdf, and can't load the system completly, because the device change. ¿I can resolving this problem booting with the patch CD? ¿Or it works only for 64 bits? ¿Or how can make a boot CD with kernel 2.6- 32 bits?
