Heelo, I held yesterday (sunday 17) a launch party in the hall of a movie theater. This theater is part of a special group (http://www.cinemas-utopia.org/toulouse/). It's a group aimed to movie addicts, ecologists, protesters. It's a moderate priced place with original films, often in the original langage (included exotics one like Corean :(-). This place is very Linux friendly, beause the people likes to try everything that is not standard :-)) Unluckyly, the weather was extremely fine so the attendance of the movies where lesser than usual. There where two organisation on the hall of the theater, my Linux User Group for openSUSE and an other friend group only devoted to Ubuntu (I could show them Gnome Shell, they where very impressed :-). on the afternoon we could distribute approximately 50 demo dvd and make several live demos. The attendance was very friendly and interested. The organisation of the boot was the following: I had two computers. An old laptop (it's important to have it be an old computer, to show how openSUSE is good with this kind of hardware) and a modern one where I could run the demo in VirtualBox, including the setup of the virtual machine. The two of them where connected to 23" HD screen. We could have internet but didn't use it. The old computer was only devoted to video sreening (using the install video I published on Blip) As expected the problems was we couldn't have sound (noisy hall and we can't disturb more the customers), but the deoms where visual en iough to have this not too bad. It's pretty difficult to speak for more than 2/3 people at a time on a boot and I was the only really competent people, so I had to make the demo and to fix a pair of computer. Gladfully the fixing was easy and fast. I had a timeline (copy of the web page below because it's in french). I made four demo lasting each for approx 45 minutes: install from a standard dvd, What is YaST, Install from the demo dvd, openSUSE: this is choice! The install from dvd part was the most interesting: one have to give very little info (name and passwd) on the default install and VirtualBow allows to have a fresh disk. People was pretty much impressed to see that after a handfull minutes, all went alone. I could even show random tour on my computer while VirtualBow installed (in 1Gb ram virtual machine), chat a lot about openSUSE to makje the waiting kwicker and see the install completely finished after approx 20 minutes from a real dvd. Could ask: "did you have to reinstall W*?" always there is one people that did and can testimony of the length of the work... I coudn't really show YaST, because at this moment we had no attendance (people where watching movies :-), but the "openSUSE have all" was very successfull. On my real copmputer, I have Gnome, Kde, xfce, lxde, metacity, twm, Gnome Shell... specially Ubuntu people where pretty much impressed by his feature :-)). We hope to have on the near future more people coming to our regular bimonthly mettings jdd convocation in french: Dimanche 17 Avril, le CULTe a le plaisir de vous inviter à une réunion de démonstration de la distribution Linux openSUSE 11.4.
