No, not really.

For example, Alpine does not store local copies of imap folders, not
even the indexes. But each time you visit an imap folder it downloads
the full index again (I think it can keep track of the last three in ram).

What Thunderbird does is store a copy of the index and the visited
emails on disk. Makes some things faster and use less network, perhaps.
But it is not an imap requirement.
