On one machine (Leap 42.3) with encrypted home, when it boots and
I'm not there it waits forever at the password prompt (not using

The best way to handle that seems to be using an ecryptfs home
directory. That way, "/home" is not encrypted but your home directory
and content is encrypted. So the system can boot unattended, and your
home directory is decrypted when you next login.

When I last did this, I kept my ".ssh" directory elsewhere, and used
symlinks so that ".ssh" showed up in my home directory whether or not
unlocked. That way I could login over ssh with public key
authentication, and then unlock the home directory (using my login
password).
