The message is a red herring, according to googlefoo. The real problem is not reported.

I tried "thunderbird --safe-mode --no-remote" and this one printed several messages, and finally popped a box saying that there was another instance of thunderbird which was not responding. I killed it, and then thunderbird started fine.

Issue solved.
