These might not be related, but the symptoms are similar
(slow/crashing/unresponsive desktop):

When your desktop becomes slow and unresponsive, try switching to a
virtual console and use 'top' to see if any process is gobbling up lots
of memory. (shift-m to sort by memory usage).
