If 'mail.warn_on_shift_delete' is not a typo you can use

command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf mail.warn_on_shift_delete

cnf mail.warn_on_shift_delete
mail.warn_on_shift_delete: command not found

Any other ideas?

No, this is not for the bash, it's in the about:config of thunderbird.
You access it via "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General -> Config
Editor (button)"

Neither:( Fails at:
Tools -> Options
Tools->Options might be the Windows version only (Mozilla apps tend to
place the preferences in different locations depending on OS).
Have you tried Edit->Options (which should the location under Linux)?

There is no 'Tools' or 'Edit', so anything which refers to such will fail. Thanks.
