have a look at the size of the 'original'
file and then have a look at its size after the conversion. Often the
conversion is BIGGER (in bytes) than the original so if you doing the
conversion to send the file to someone and want to send them the
smallest sized file then the original may be the one to send.

If either is a .png, run optipng against it before deciding which is smaller.
Any lossy image can be reduced in size with the right tool.
