Also just discovered another thing which does not work: the above images are in *.png format; I tried to convert them to *.jpg in Dolphin but the attempts were simply ignored.

Dolphin is a filing program, not an image editor. You can right click on it and change the file extension to whatever you like but it doesn't change the format. If you want to change formats use an image editor like Gimp.

If you have a graphics file - say *.jpg - you can, using Dolphin, convert it almost any format. To do so, r-c on the file, select ACTION from the drop down menu then select CONVERT.

But one caution about this: have a look at the size of the 'original' file and then have a look at its size after the conversion. Often the conversion is BIGGER (in bytes) than the original so if you doing the conversion to send the file to someone and want to send them the smallest sized file then the original may be the one to send.
