Shouldn't fsck be run on an unmounted filesystem? It's been so long I
can't remember.-- Ken Schneider

It was, and is, run on boot, automatically, on the root filesystem,
which is mounted read only at that instant. If changes are made, you
have to reboot. But what it can do is limited.
