Kernel modules, at least from the technical POV, are "derived works"
from the linux kernel and therefore should be made available with a
license compatible with GPL.

That's not actually perfectly necessary (though nice, and makes
developers happier). But if they are not, shipping them bundled with the
kernel (like a distributor would do) is illegal - the entity doing so
would lose all rights under the GPL, which would be sort of bad for a
Linux vendor. That's the crux.
