It shows

/dev/sda5:openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64):SUSE:linux
/dev/sda6:openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64):SUSE1:linux

So it is obvuiouly is detected by os-prober. Now could you explain what exactly

"if I boot into 12.2 and run (2) above oS 12.3 on sda5 is not
recognised in the btldr"

means? You do not get openSUSE 12.3 in boot menu? You get it in boot
menu but it does not boot or it boots wrong OS?
