Wasn't it 3? 3 GiB for the application, 1 GiB for the kernel, total 4 GiB.
And each app was able to have a different 3 GiB block.

1 GB for the kernel is a tunable default I believe. Tune it down to
0.75 GB and apps can have 3.25 GB. The total is 4GB.
