You have to look at the output of "smartctl -a /dev/sdc".

I am considering replacing the hdd with a Seagate SATA3 4TB. Will
suse kernel 2.6.38 recognize > 2TB.

The question is not only the kernel, but partitioning tools. You need
to use GPT on such a disk.

You could also use it without partition table.
