Quite likely - when exactly do you get the message that "/dev/sda1 is
not a valid block device" ?

Hello Per - and Thank you

- after installing new kernel, i first noticed prob when trying to run RSYNC for backup

but, now realize it is NOT possible to mount ANY sda partition

.............
